The natural heat created as the manure composts, kills any weed seeds and so it is left sterile.  After mushroom farmers have used this medium to grow their mushrooms, it is removed from the barns, left to compost further over the winter, and then it ready for us.

Fresh mushroom compost has an average of 6.6 so it falls right into the ideal pH range for most crops between 6.0 and 7.0.
